"Pre-roll" covers more than one thing. A half-gram joint, a pack of minis, a two-gram blunt and a hash hole are all sold on the same shelf. They differ in size, in what they're wrapped in and in what's inside, and those three things decide how long one lasts and how strong it is.
The short answer. A joint is ground flower rolled in paper. A mini is a smaller joint, usually sold in packs. A blunt is a thicker roll in a heavier wrap. A hash hole is a joint with a core of hash running through the middle. A spliff mixes cannabis with tobacco, and California's rules keep it off every licensed menu.
| Format | Typical size | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Joint | 0.5–1.2 g | Paper, flower inside |
| Mini | 0.35–0.5 g | Small joint, sold in packs |
| Blunt | About 2 g | Heavier wrap, longer smoke |
| Hash hole | About 2.4 g | Hash core inside |
| Spliff | — | Tobacco mix; not sold legally |
Any of the first four can also be infused, with concentrate added to the flower. That changes strength more than the format does, and it's covered below and in pre-rolls vs flower.
Joints: singles and multipacks
The standard pre-roll is ground flower in a paper cone with a filter tip. Sizes run from half a gram to a gram and a bit: our own house joint is rolled from indoor flower, and Animal sells one-gram singles. Multipacks hold several full joints, like West Coast Cure's CUREjoint three-pack of one-gram rolls.
A single is the smallest commitment on the shelf, and the format to start with if you're new; the beginner's guide to cannabis products explains why.
Minis
A mini is a joint shrunk to a third or half a gram, sold in packs of five to twenty. Ape's ten-pack holds ten joints of 0.5 g each, and West Coast Cure's CUREjoint Minis come six to a pack at 0.35 g each.
The point of a mini is portion size. A full joint keeps burning whether you're still smoking or not, and a relit one tastes worse. A mini is closer to one sitting's worth, so you're less likely to waste half of it or smoke more than you meant to.
Infused minis
Plenty of minis are infused, and the brand name often won't tell you. Jeeter's Baby Jeeters are five half-gram joints "infused with Liquid Diamonds" and "dusted in kief," per the brand. West Coast Cure's Jefferey infused five-pack is described as "crafted for discerning consumers with an elevated tolerance." Animal's THCa five-packs say THCa in the name instead of infused.
An infused mini is small in size, not in strength. The added concentrate makes it stronger than a plain joint of the same weight, so don't treat "mini" as "mild." How to tell infused from plain is in pre-rolls vs flower, and everything infused on our menu, minis included, is gathered on the infused pre-rolls page.
Blunts
A blunt is a fatter roll in a heavier wrap. Traditionally that wrap was the tobacco leaf of a hollowed-out cigar, which is where the name and the stereotype come from.
Licensed blunts in California can't be made that way. State rules say a cannabis product meant for inhalation "shall only contain cannabis, cannabis concentrate, terpenes, rolling paper, leaf," pre-roll filter tips and FDA-approved inactive ingredients. A separate rule bars any additive that would create "an unsafe combination with other psychoactive substances including, but not limited to, nicotine." So a blunt from a licensed retailer is wrapped in something other than tobacco. Ape's 2.2 g single blunt, for example, uses "a wrap made of hemp paper" and a glass tip.
What you get from a blunt is size and time. At 2 grams or more it holds as much flower as several joints, and it's built to be smoked slowly or shared. That makes it a poor first purchase and a reasonable one for a group of adults 21 and over.
Hash holes
A hash hole is a joint, usually a large one, with a channel of hash or rosin running down its center. As it burns, the flower and the hash core burn together. On our menu in October 2026, Ape's 2.4 g Hash Hole was the example.
Hash is a concentrate, trichomes separated from the plant (concentrates explained covers how it's made), so a hash hole is an infused pre-roll in a particular shape. Between the concentrate and the size, it's one of the strongest formats on the pre-roll shelf, and it's made for experienced smokers.
Spliffs
A spliff is cannabis mixed with tobacco, rolled in paper. People roll them at home; licensed retailers can't sell them. The same two rules quoted above, the short list of what an inhaled cannabis product may contain and the ban on combinations with nicotine, leave no room for tobacco in a licensed pre-roll. A "spliff" sold as a cannabis product didn't come from the legal market.
Which format to pick
- New, or smoking alone: a plain single or a pack of plain minis. Small portions, nothing extra.
- A regular who wants convenience: a multipack of joints or minis in a strain you already like.
- Sharing with a group: a blunt, or a bigger pack of minis that people can take one at a time.
- Experienced and after strength: an infused pre-roll or a hash hole, smoked over more than one session.
Whatever you pick, a pre-roll keeps for less time than a jar of flower once it's out of its tube, and it's still cannabis in a car: it rides sealed or in the trunk. The full shelf is on the pre-roll menu.
Common questions
What is a hash hole? A pre-roll, typically larger than a standard joint, with a core of hash or rosin running through its center. It counts as infused, and it's stronger than a plain joint of the same size.
Is a blunt stronger than a joint? Not per gram, if both are plain flower; it's just bigger. A 2 g blunt holds roughly what four half-gram joints do. An infused blunt or joint is a different matter.
Do California blunts have tobacco in them? Not the ones sold by licensed retailers. State rules limit inhaled cannabis products to cannabis, concentrate, terpenes, paper, leaf, filter tips and FDA-approved inactive ingredients, and bar combinations with nicotine.
Are mini joints infused? Some are and some aren't. Plain minis are ordinary joints in a smaller size; infused minis have concentrate added. Check the description for words like infused, THCa, diamonds or kief.
The short version
Joints, minis, blunts and hash holes differ in size, wrap and what's inside. Minis are joints in smaller portions; blunts are bigger rolls in heavier wraps, never tobacco on a licensed menu; hash holes and anything infused are the strong end of the shelf. Spliffs aren't sold legally in California at all. Everything we deliver is for adults 21 and over, with ID checked at the car.
